Nicole Kidman’s Vogue China Cover: A Missed Opportunity for Star Power?

Vogue China has seen significant shifts recently, especially following Margaret Zhang’s departure and Rocco Liu’s assumption of the editorial helm. The publication hasn’t made major waves since Sarah Snook adorned its cover back in February. Now, Rocco Liu has secured the iconic Nicole Kidman for the cover of the May 2026 issue, marking a notable moment for the magazine. The stunning image, captured by photographer Sean Thomas and styled by the renowned Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, features Kidman showcasing an elegant two-piece ensemble from Matthieu Blazy’s latest Pre-Fall 2026 Chanel collection. This collaboration comes on the heels of Kidman’s return as a Chanel ambassador earlier this year.

The response to Nicole Kidman’s cover has been mixed among fashion enthusiasts. “NO!” exclaimed one forum member, BalkaniStaCouture, reflecting a sentiment that resonated with others. Another user, mikel, expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s not that bad, but it all feels so middle of the road. What a waste of Carlyne and Nicole.”

WAVES noted that the execution could have been enhanced, remarking, “This should’ve been much better.” Meanwhile, fashionsavvvvvy voiced dissatisfaction with the photography, suggesting, “Temu Peter Lindbergh,” expressing a desire for a more dynamic visual approach. Balmain1914 criticized the choice of imagery as well, mentioning, “The close-up face shot could have served better. Again, Vogue China always picks the less ideal ones for the cover!”

Despite the critiques, not all feedback was negative. An excited user remarked, “Finally, something buzz-worthy coming from Vogue China! About time, too, because it has felt like the magazine has been dormant for the past several months. Massively here for Nicole Kidman being on the cover, and Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele styling. The cover shot might not have been the correct one, but it’s working, and I like the art direction,” significantly highlighting the anticipation surrounding this issue.

As discussions surrounding the May 2026 issue continue, it’s clear that Nicole Kidman’s return to Vogue China has reignited interest in the publication, with opinions variably showcasing a blend of skepticism and excitement about its future direction.
