James Franco Revamps History: Co-Creating a Bold New Label

    Paly Hollywood

The Rolling Stones are celebrating their extensive visual history with a fresh perspective, partnering with the Los Angeles-based label Paly to launch a capsule collection that artfully combines archival references with contemporary design sensibilities.

In collaboration with Universal Music Group’s merchandising division, Bravado, this limited-edition collection taps into the band’s rich six-decade archive, creatively reimagining iconic elements like their renowned tongue logo through the narrative-focused lens of Paly.

Debuting on palyhollywood.com, the 10-piece collection comprises T-shirts, hoodies, and accessories and launched in retail at H. Lorenzo in Los Angeles. A European rollout commenced at Selfridges on April 27, with prices ranging from $295 to $850.

Kyle Lindgren, Paly’s designer, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “The Stones are the perfect marriage between James and my taste.” This reflects his creative partnership with actor and filmmaker James Franco, enhancing the brand’s narrative richness. “James being a storyteller and an author…and then from my side, just being a connoisseur of fashion and vintage,” he added. “It was just a nice overall marriage between personal tastes.”

This collaboration began when Selfridges approached Paly for their Summer of Sound program. What started as a short-term project transformed into a full-fledged partnership with Bravado and The Rolling Stones, showcasing Paly’s evolution from concept to prominent presence in the fashion arena.

Founded amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by Lindgren and Franco, Paly initially began as a creative experiment blending Franco’s artistic pursuits with Lindgren’s passion for vintage fashion. The brand’s inception involved small runs of T-shirts shared among friends, which led to significant traction within independent retailers across L.A. Paly has since expanded, forming collaborations with cultural estates and institutions linked to notable figures, including Elvis Presley and Natalie Wood, gaining a fanbase that includes celebrities like Jacob Elordi.

Lindgren shed light on Paly’s growth, stating, “While I can’t share exact numbers, our collaborations consistently sell out quickly.”

The design ethos for the Rolling Stones capsule is deeply rooted in research, archival analysis, and material experimentation. Lindgren focused on vintage band T-shirts, exploring the resale market to identify what makes certain designs resonate with audiences. He draws from a vast collection of Franco’s artwork—reportedly numbering between 15,000 to 20,000 pieces—informing the aesthetics of the products.

The team meticulously created vintage-inspired finishes through unique dyeing and washing techniques, as well as distressing and print methods. Lindgren expressed fascination with specific colors, emphasizing that replicating the nuanced fading in vintage garments demanded extensive sampling. Additionally, the collection features hand-drawn graphics mimicking Sharpie textures and decorative elements like rhinestones.

“With each piece, there’s a story,” Lindgren remarked, highlighting the collection’s narrative depth.

In summary, the collaboration between Paly and The Rolling Stones is not just a fusion of fashion and music; it is a rich dialogue that brings historical motifs into the present, crafted with care and artistic intent. This limited edition collection invites fans to wear a piece of rock history, while also engaging with a fresh narrative that resonates across generations.
