EBay has projected its profit for the key holiday quarter to fall short of Wall Street expectations, reflecting ongoing macroeconomic anxieties. After announcing these forecasts, the company’s shares plummeted by 8.5% in after-hours trading on Wednesday.
Impact of Tariffs on Small Businesses
Recent adjustments to tariffs and customs regulations in the United States have created considerable uncertainty for small enterprises. This evolving landscape has raised alarm regarding the rising costs of imported goods, negatively affecting consumer sentiment and spending behaviors.
Global Economic Headwinds
During a post-earnings conference, CEO Jamie Iannone highlighted that eBay is grappling with persistent macroeconomic challenges in various international markets. Additionally, the complexities surrounding cross-border trade into the U.S. have intensified during this period.
Investor Reactions to Quarterly Performance
Investors appeared skeptical about eBayโs growth trajectory, as indicated by the drop in stock prices following the release of the companyโs earnings report. Michael Ashley Schulman, the Chief Investment Officer at Running Point Capital, noted that the reported quarterly revenue and profit exceeded estimates but did not inspire confidence in eBay’s growth potential.
Quarterly Revenue and Earnings
For the third quarter, eBay reported revenues of $2.82 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.36 per share, surpassing analysts’ predictions of $2.73 billion and $1.33 per share, respectively. This marked a notable performance against a backdrop of economic uncertainty.
Decline in Volume Growth
The company noted a slowdown in year-over-year volume growth starting in September, particularly in significant markets importing goods into the U.S. This trend followed the abolition of the de minimis exemption, according to CFO Peggy Alford during the earnings call.
Changes to Parcel Import Regulations
In late August, the U.S. government ended de minimis tariff exemptions for imports and began imposing standard duty rates on package shipments valued under $800, affecting online platforms like eBay. This legislative change was anticipated to influence sales and trading behaviors in the e-commerce sector.
Increasing Demand for Precious Metals
Alford also observed a rising demand for bullion and collectible coins on eBay, a trend attributed to the recent appreciation of commodity prices for precious metals. However, she remarked that this surge might not be sustainable in the long run.
Future Projections for EBay
Looking ahead, eBay expects its adjusted earnings for the fourth quarter to fall between $1.31 and $1.36 per share, which is below the analysts’ average forecast of $1.39 per share. Nonetheless, the company anticipates revenue to range from $2.83 billion to $2.89 billion, surpassing the estimate of $2.79 billion.
