JD Sports is set to revolutionize the way customers shop by enabling direct purchases through AI platforms, allowing users to buy products seamlessly without navigating away from the app.
This British sportswear and trainer retailer will introduce “one-click purchases” via innovative platforms like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, positioning itself at the forefront of AI-driven shopping experiences.
The launch is scheduled for the US in the upcoming months, with plans for expansion into other markets, as stated by the company.
Jetan Chowk, JD Sports’ Chief Technology Officer, emphasized to PA Media that AI represents “the future of how people will shop.”
“We observe that customers frequently use AI applications to research and discover their desired products,” he explained. “It’s crucial for us to start early in catering to their evolving shopping needs.”
AI adoption is particularly pronounced among the core demographic of shoppers aged 18 to 24, highlighting a trend that’s reshaping retail.
Insights from KPMG revealed that last year, a significant portion—30%—of those aged between 25 and 34 utilized AI chatbots to hunt for deals online.
These advanced language models enable users to communicate in a conversational manner while receiving tailored product recommendations based on extensive internet data and established datasets. Not all sources are deemed equal, with some being more credible than others.
Multiple UK retailers are enhancing their digital presence by optimizing generative engines—an evolution of traditional search engine optimization—to enhance visibility in AI chatbot responses.
Strategies include engaging in Reddit forums, actively managing reviews on Google or Trustpilot, and ensuring AI models access accurate product information.
This shift presents new challenges for retailers vying for online visibility and could diminish Google’s stronghold on conventional shopping-related search traffic.
Meanwhile, Google has started rolling out its own AI functionalities, teaming up with notable US retailers like Walmart to facilitate shopping through its Gemini AI chatbot. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, stated customers could soon enjoy their Walmart experiences directly via the Gemini app.
Moreover, a growing number of consumers are turning to AI agents—virtual digital assistants—to enhance their online shopping experience. Last year, major companies such as OpenAI, Perplexity, Google, and Microsoft debuted AI features that empower users to find products through chatbots, with agents that can place orders on behalf of the shopper.
JD Sports is poised to report its fourth-quarter performance following the critical holiday sales period on January 21. The retailer mentioned late last year that rising youth unemployment in the UK impacted its sales growth and profit margins.
