The legendary fashion house Balenciaga, founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga, is taking a profound step to honor its Basque origins through a new artistic initiative called “Artean,” which translates to “between” in the ancient Basque language. This project, led by Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli, seeks to mesh contemporary art with the company’s rich cultural heritage.
Launching during the illustrious Salone del Mobile—Milan’s Design Week—this inaugural exhibition will spotlight the works of Eduardo Chillida, a renowned Basque sculptor celebrated for his powerful, abstract pieces that deeply inspired the original couturier. Balenciaga aims to create a dialogue between the intricate world of art and its roots.
Piccioli emphasizes the emotional impact of art, stating, “Art is a generator of emotion—a vehicle for culture and, more significantly, a source of energy, thought, and curiosity.” He envisions the project as a space where art intersects with the Basque identity, inviting attendees to explore the emotional connections tied to both fields.
The exhibition will showcase seven exceptional works from the 1950s to the 1990s that not only reflect an artistic ethos aligned with Cristóbal Balenciaga but also pay direct homage to his legacy. Set against the backdrop of Balenciaga’s flagship store on Via Montenapoleone, the pieces will resonate in harmony with the store’s architectural design and the upcoming spring 2026 collections.
“I am confident that anyone visiting the exhibition will feel the enduring power of this creative dialogue,” Piccioli remarked, expressing his pride in sharing this unique intersection of history and art.
The featured artwork, titled “Gravitation Homage to Balenciaga” by Eduardo Chillida, exemplifies the deep connection between the worlds of sculpture and fashion, illustrating the house’s commitment to honoring its Basque roots while embracing modern artistic expressions.
This new initiative is not just about showcasing art; it’s about forging connections that span generations and artistic realms. The first Artean exhibition will take place from April 21 to 27, marked by the presence of a special guest, Mikel Chillida, grandson of Eduardo Chillida and director of Chillida Leku, an open-air museum that pays tribute to the sculptor’s legacy.
In a previous collaboration, Chillida Leku held an exhibition in 2024 titled “Chillida/Balenciaga — Plying Form,” which explored the interconnected themes of space and form in both the sculptor’s and couturier’s work. This intersection of art and fashion continues to pave the way for new interpretations and dialogues within the creative community.
Through the Artean series, Balenciaga not only showcases the beauty of Basque heritage but also invites a global audience to engage with the emotional landscapes crafted by both art and fashion, fostering a deeper appreciation for the cultural narratives that shape these two disciplines.
